The Essential Michael Jackson è una raccolta contenente 38 grandi successi di Michael Jackson pubblicata dalla Epic Records, dai tempi della Motown e dei Jackson 5 fino alle grandi hit del 2001 come "You Rock My World". Questa raccolta fu fortemente criticata dai fan, ma la scelta di pubblicarla fu della Sony, per sfruttare il periodo positivo immediatamente dopo l'assoluzione di Jackson dalle accuse di molestia. Malgrado si trattasse dell'ennesimo gretatest hits, si piazzò in testa alle classifiche della Gran Bretagna, Francia e Belgio, ed entrando in Top 10 nella classifica dell'Europa, Germania, Argentina, Danimarca, Grecia, Irlanda, Malesia, Nuova Zelanda, Olanda, Norvegia, Portogallo, Sud Corea, Svezia, Svizzera, Taiwan e Turchia. Il 14 Febbraio 2008 l'album è rientrato in classifica in Svezia alla #23 posizione. Il 26 Agosto dello stesso anno inoltre il disco è stato ripubblicato in edizione speciale solo negli Stati Uniti.
L'album ha venduto fino ad oggi oltre 12 milioni di doppi dischi, e in media vende ancora circa 400.000 copie all'anno (di cui 100.000 nei soli Stati Uniti).
Dopo la morte del cantante, avvenuta il 25 giugno 2009, il disco è rientrato nelle classifiche di tutto il mondo, tra cui gli Stati Uniti, dove ha raggiunto il primo posto con oltre 148.000 copie vendute, e la Gran Bretagna, dove è rimasto in testa alle classifiche per 8 settimane consecutive.[1] Nell'Agosto 2009, la RIAA ha certificato l'album doppio disco di platino.
